What is the Arts Council of Pirkanmaa?

The purpose of the Arts Council of Pirkanmaa is to support professional artists, associations and organisations working in the Pirkanmaa region. The national Finnish arts administration is formed by 13 regional arts councils, several discipline-specific councils and the Arts Council of Finland, which reports to the Ministry of Education. In the four decades since it was created, this administrative structure has demonstrated its effectiveness. A model unique in Europe, it is based on independent decision-making by professional artists and art experts and lays special emphasis on the work of regional-level committees.

The Arts Council of Pirkanmaa has eleven members in its current term 2007-2009. They were appointed by the Provincial State Office of Western Finland from lists of candidates nominated by regional arts and cultural organisations. The members of the the Arts Council are all experts on different areas of art and the whole geographical area, as well.

Grants

The Arts Council of Pirkanmaa awards grants for individual artists living in the region once a year. Grants are divided into working and project grants. The latter can also be awarded to groups of artists. Applications for the grants must be submitted in October. It is advisable to check the application deadline with the Arts Council office or website in case of changes. It is also possible to apply for travelling grants for art work outside Finland. An applicant for travelling grant should have an exhibition, a performance or participate as an artist in a seminar in a foreign country. Last application deadline for travelling grants this year is August 2009.

State grants for associations must generally be applied before the end of December for the next year, but it is always advisable to check the application period in good time. The Arts Council also has discretionary power to award grants in the autumn on the basis of late applications if provided funds are still available. Then the applicationas have to be sent before the end on August.

Application forms are available both from the office of the Arts Council and from the art administrations of the municipalities in Pirkanmaa. Information on the basis in which the grants are awarded as well as on how to fill in the forms and annexes are distributed together with application forms. Application forms in Finnish can be downloaded here.
